Branch Failures  - Failure can occur when there is no wind. The splinters will point downward when this type of failure occurs. When high winds lead to the fracture of the branch, the splinters will usually point upward. Branches that fail during high winds usually crack as the branch bends upward. Branches are not well constructed for upward pressures. Also, do not confuse branch cracking with branch pullout from the trunk. [Page 186 MA]
