Extractives - Extractives are substances that can be extracted from the wood by using various solvents. As cells age and die in some species, the cell walls and lumens are impregnated with extractives that impart a protective feature to the wood. Because these chemicals can be extracted in other chemicals, the protection substances are called extractives.
