This Eastern White Pine Tree had a major wound. The tree set a barrier zone separating the tree at the time of wounding from the growth after that time. Then carpenter ants, respecting boundaries, created galleries within the barrier zone, thus stalling rot or decay. Then a pileated wood pecker created many cavities, with some connected. Now shortly after the pileated wood pecker created the condo, the flying squirrels (genus: Glaucomys) moved in. I found them on 12-04-2007.
