Lenticels  - Gas exchange occurs through the lenticels.  In the winter when there are no leaves on the trees photosynthesis takes place when the temperature rises above 40 degrees F.  The exchanging of gases is done by the lenticels.  As trees get older, the lenticels become less efficient.  This occurs in most trees when strong, suberized, periderm, or outer bark forms.
