Polyene  - Chlorophyll is a molecule that starts the energy trapping process.  The molecule has magnesium [Mg] at its center with 4 nitrogen [N] atoms bonded to it.  A long chain of carbon and hydrogen atoms attach the molecule to a membrane.  The molecule has a series of double and single bonds with carbon that make it a very receptive light absorbing pigment.  Such a compound is called a polyene.
