Rib Wood  - On the trunk, after wounding, callus forms first about the margins of the wound;  Woundwood forms later as the cells become lignified.  The ribs are called rib wood.  Old farmers used to know this feature.  They used to make slices down the tree trunks (wounds) of hickory and then make axe handles out of the rib wood which forms.  Very durable.
