Saprophytes - Most microorganisms that live on bark are saprophytes and cause the tree no injury. Indeed, under some circumstances these organisms can actually benefit the tree by protecting it from aggressive parasitic organisms. Bark moisture is an important factor affecting the invasion of bark parasites and the action of bark saprophytes on these parasites. As bark moisture is reduced, conditions favor the parasites.
