Fissures  - Bark fissures form on maturing trees.  They form on trees that the bark plates only divide in one direction such as oaks.  Some trees, such as beech, do not form fissures because the bark plates divide in two directions as the tree grows in girth.  Click here for pictures.   See "Bark."
